Ventolin Inhaler (Salbutamol)

Ventolin Inhaler (blue asthma inhaler) is a fast-acting reliever inhaler used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains salbutamol, a bronchodilator that works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, helping them open up to make breathing easier. Ventolin is used to quickly relieve sudden symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, and can also be taken before exercise to prevent exercise-induced asthma. It is otherwise known as the blue ‘reliever’ inhaler The effects are usually felt within minutes, making it an essential rescue treatment for many patients. Ventolin Inhaler is not for long-term control but provides immediate symptom relief when needed.

  • To ensure good asthma control, we will only issue a maximum of 2 inhalers in any 12 week period. If you require an inhaler more frequently, it may be a sign you need to have your asthma reviewed.
  • If you are ordering because you have lost your inhaler, please let us know.

How often should I be using my inhaler?

It is said that because the Ventolin Evohaler is primarily used for relief on a when required basis, you should only be using one inhaler every month or two months depending on your condition. The usual dosage involves patients using one to two puffs of Ventolin up to a maximum of four times a day when it is required. However, if you are finding that you are needing your Ventolin Evohaler more and more, it may be best to go and visit your GP as your condition may not be as well controlled as you think.

Who can use a Ventolin Evohaler?

Ventolin can be used by a variety of individuals, from children to adults. However, our Goodcure prescriber is only able to prescribe and issue medication to patients over the age of 18. If you are under the age of 18, are pregnant or planning to be pregnant, it is crucial that you are seen by your GP and obtain this medication from them as our team cannot prescribe any medication under these particular circumstances. If you have had previous negative reactions to the drug Salbutamol, Ventolin may not be suitable for you.

Do Ventolin Inhalers contain steroids?

No, Ventolin inhalers do not contain steroids. They contain salbutamol -- sometimes called albuterol. Salbutamol is a sympathomimetic bronchodilator, meaning that it helps to relax the muscles in the airways, making it much easier to breathe.

How quickly does Ventolin start working?

The blue inhaler has become a prized possession amongst asthma sufferers of all ages because of how fast it is able to act on asthma symptoms. The Ventolin Evohaler is able to relieve symptoms within five minutes of administering the medication, making it a handy (as well as portable) tool for asthma related emergencies.

How do I know if my condition is not being well controlled by Ventolin?

Asthma, when not managed appropriately, can potentially be fatal. Speaking to your GP or Asthma Nurse can be beneficial as there may be treatments more beneficial to you. Not sure when to seek urgent care? If any of the mentioned points apply to you, seek medical attention as soon as possible:

• Your Ventolin inhaler is only relieving your symptoms for less than 4 hours.

• You are overusing your inhaler, and going over the recommended daily limits of 8 puffs a day.

• Even after using your inhaler, you are still struggling to breathe.

• Your chest is still tight or grows painfully tight after using your inhaler.

If your condition is not this serious, it may still be beneficial to book an asthma review if:

• You are waking up more than once in the middle of the night with asthmatic symptoms.

• Your airways are restricted to the point where it limits daily activity.

• You start to use your Salbutamol inhaler more frequently.

How do I use my Ventolin Evohaler during an asthma attack?

In the event of a sudden asthma attack, it is okay to go over the regular dosage of 8 puffs daily. You can inhale up to 10 puffs up salbutamol with 30 seconds between each puff. Prior to administering the dose, the inhaler should be shaken to prime it appropriately. When an asthma attack is more severe, you can administer this medicine through a nebuliser. This is an instrument that is able to deliver the medication in a mist form which is inhaler through a facemask. Unless prescribed this already, it will be given to you by a doctor. Asthma attacks have the ability to get worse within a very short period of time, urgent medical attention should be given if you or your child are:

• are having difficulty breathing and your asthmatic symptoms are not improving.

• Even after 10 puffs of salbutamol, your condition has not improved. You are able to take another dose of up to 10 puffs at least 10 minutes after your initial dose if absolutely necessary.

An asthma action plan details what your asthma symptoms are and what to do if they are getting worse. It also lists what medicines you take daily to aid with symptoms and what emergency action to take when an asthma attack occurs. This is usually filled in with your healthcare provider and it is specific to you and is able to amended during asthma appointments to better suit your needs. If you are unable to source one directly from your GP or asthma nurse, you can download an asthma action plan here .

Do you need a spacer for Ventolin?

A spacer is a cylindrical plastic tube where you can insert your inhaler's mouthpiece on one side and breath through the mask or mouthpiece on the other side. A spacer can be incredibly helpful in making sure that none of the medicine goes to waste, essentially helping you get the best possible use out of each puff. Spacers can only be used with metered dose inhalers (MDI), so if you have a dry powder or breath actuated inhaler, a spacer will not be necessary. Spacers are usually given to children to make sure that they are able to inhale the medicine correctly, but sometimes adults can be issued a spacer if they have deemed it necessary. You do not always need to use a spacer, but it can be a great tool to maximise the salbutamol in your Ventolin. Need help using a spacer with your Ventolin inhaler? You can watch this demonstration of how to use a spacer with tidal breathing , a helpful technique to have the best possible intake of this aerosol medicine.

Attach the Inhaler: Connect the mouthpiece of the Ventolin inhaler into the end of the spacer firmly so that it doesn’t fall off during the inhalation process.

Breathe Out: Stand or sit upright, then breathe out fully such a way no air exists in your lungs. This prepares your lungs to inhale the medication completely.

Place the Spacer: Keep the mouthpiece of the spacer between your teeth and above your lips. Now close your lips tightly around the men making a good seal so that the medication doesn’t escape during inhaling process.

Activate the Inhaler: Press down on the top of the inhaler to dispense one puff of medication into the spacer.

Inhale Slowly: Breathe in slowly and deeply through your mouth, making sure to keep your lips sealed around the spacer.

Hold Your Breath: Hold your breath for around 10 seconds, allowing the medication to reach your lungs.

Exhale and Repeat: Exhale slowly away from the spacer. If you need a second puff, wait for 30 seconds to 1 minute and then shake the inhaler again before repeating the process. After using the inhaler, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out to minimise the risk of side effects. It is important to clean your Ventolin inhaler (salbutamol) with a clean, dry cloth or tissue after using each time.
